During my university years I enrolled in a course titled 'Neuro-anatomy'. During class we were paired in order to discuss the content of the lesson. My partner frequently asked me to 'shhh' as she listened to the lecturer talk to other pairs. I found it disconcerting and asked her why she persistently did this. Her response to my question was, "I need to hear the lecturer pronounce this word (pointing to the word, which was the 'corticogeniculate (cells)'. " I protested that it was a perfectly regular word and pronounced it. She said, "I can't do that, besides you might not get it right, I have to hear it to know what it is." It was my turn to be astounded and I asked, "Do you do this with all the larger words - there are hundreds of them?"

This university student had a phenomenal memory but she still lacked the independence that I, with a lesser processing capacity, had.

I often wonder just how much talent is never expressed due to such difficulties. Many students in her position would surely simply give up and do something less challenging.
